Sports Mole previews Tuesday's FA Cup clash between Salford City and Peterborough United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

After playing out a 2-2 draw in the original meeting, Salford City and Peterborough United will re-commence battle when they go head-to-head in Tuesday's FA Cup replay.

The winner of the first-round tie will go on to play host to either Doncaster Rovers or Accrington Stanley at the start of December.

Match preview

Salford are hoping that they can avoid a repeat of last year's FA Cup campaign when they were eliminated in the first round by Peterborough following a 3-0 defeat in the replay.

While Peterborough may be playing in the league above Salford, the fourth-tier side will be frustrated to have a replay after being denied the outright victory in the original meeting.

Salford established a 2-1 lead following a Stephen Mallan strike and a Nicholas Bilokapic own goal, but Emmanuel Fernandez struck in the 93rd minute to send the tie back to the Peninsula Stadium.

The draw did extend Salford's unbeaten run to five competitive matches, but that was swiftly brought to an end on Saturday as they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat in their home meeting with Mansfield Town.

Having conceded at least two goals in each of their last five home games, Salford will need to tighten up defensively if they are to reach the FA Cup second round for the fourth time in their history.

After enjoying a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions, Peterborough would have been disappointed to see their fine spell of form come to an end with a defeat to Wigan Athletic.

However, Posh bounced back in the best possible way, picking up a dominant 5-0 victory over rivals Cambridge United in Saturday's derby meeting.

Braces for Ephron Mason-Clark and Kwame Poku in addition to a Liam Bennett own goal enabled Peterborough to claim derby bragging rights.

That impressive result extended their unbeaten home run to nine competitive matches, but the League One side will now head on their travels for Tuesday's meeting with Salford City.

Having won two of their last three away matches, the visitors may fancy their chances of beating Salford in the FA Cup first round for the second straight season.

Team News

Salford are still unable to call upon the injured quartet of Ossama Ashley, Callum Hendry, Kevin Berkoe and Luke Bolton.

Declan John is ineligible to play in the competition as part of his loan agreement with his parent club Bolton Wanderers.

Having scored 14 goals in 21 competitive appearances, Matt Smith will look to continue his fine form when he leads the line.

As for the visitors, Will Blackmore and Jeando Fuchs are both sidelined with injury issues, while Malik Mothersille is a doubt due to a shoulder problem.

Ferguson could make a couple of changes to freshen up his side, with Romoney Crichlow and Robert De Haviland both in contention to feature in the lineup after starting the initial cup tie.

Ricky-Jade Jones, who scored in the reverse fixture, is expected to lead the line, and he is likely to be supported in the final third by Joel Randall, Poku and Mason-Clark.

Salford City possible starting lineup:
Cairns; Shephard, Tilt, Garbutt; Ingram, Mallan, Watt, Watson; N'Mai, Lund; Smith

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Bilokapic; Kioso, Knight, Crichlow, Burrows; De Havilland, Collins; Poku, Randall, Mason-Clark; Jones

We say: Salford City 1-2 Peterborough United

Peterborough claimed a 3-0 away victory over Salford in last season's FA Cup replay, and while we believe that Tuesday's contest will produce a closer scoreline, we still expect the visitors to emerge victorious.
