Sports Mole previews Sunday's friendly clash between Honduras and Barbados, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Honduras will step up their preparations for the CONCACAF Gold Cup when they play Barbados in a friendly on Sunday at Olympia Stadium Baton Rouge.

The hosts are coming into this clash off the back of a heavy defeat against Canada in the March international break, whilst Barbados will be looking to make it back-to-back victories.

Match preview

Honduras brought their CONCACAF Nations League campaign to an end in March with a difficult evening at BMO Field against Canada, coming out as 4-1 losers.

A Cyle Larin brace within the first 12 minutes of the contest put the visitors on the back foot and they were unable to recover, although Jorge Benguche did manage to grab a consolation late in the second half.

Diego Vasquez's men finished second in their Nations League group - behind Canada and ahead of Curacao - meaning their League A status is secured for the competition's next running.

All attention this summer is on the Gold Cup for Los Catrachos, with the nation's best result in the competition coming back in 1991 - a year they finished second behind the USA.

Barbados were not so successful in the Nations League during March's international break, although they were able to record their only victory of the competition with a 2-1 away win in Antigua and Barbuda.

Myles Weston for the hosts ahead at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium after 30 minutes, but second-half strikes from Thierry Gale and Tajio James secured a rare maximum for the visitors that day.

Having collected just those three points in the entirety of the Nations League, Barbados will be plying their trade in League C next time around after earning promotion from that level in 2019.

Orlando Costa's men failed to qualify for the Gold Cup in the USA and Canada this summer, meaning Sunday's trip to Honduras the only match on the itinerary for the Bajan Tridents.

Team News

Honduras have a few notable admissions from their matchday squad on Sunday due to injury, with DC United right-back Andy Najar sidelined until next month because of a thigh knock.

Romell Quioto is expected to be back of action for an extended period of time due to a long-term hamstring injury - the 31-year-old last played for his club side CF Montreal on May 14.

Barbados' Gale has impressed in the Georgian top flight for Dila Gori this season, and the 21-year-old is expected to lead the line for the visitors on Sunday.

The majority of the Bajan Tridents' squad plays their club football in their homeland, but Curtis Hutson of Redditch United in England will be looking to make only his second appearance for his national side.

Honduras possible starting lineup:
L Lopez; Garcia, Maldonado, Leveron; Almendarez, D Flores, Arriaga, F Flores; Lopez, Lozano, Rosales

Barbados possible starting lineup:
Sanchez; Matos, Morejon, Paradela, Piedra; Pozo-Venta, Perez, Cavafe; Reyes, Espino

We say: Honduras 2-0 Barbados

Honduras are fully focused on preparing for their Gold Cup campaign and should make easy work of seeing off a Barbados side who are enduring a run of poor form.

The Bajan Tridents will face a tough task on their travels this weekend, and it may turn into damage limitation for Costa's men in this one.
