Sports Mole previews Friday's Championship clash between Burnley and West Bromwich Albion, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Sports Mole

Two promotion hopefuls clash at Turf Moor on Friday night as Burnley host West Bromwich Albion in the Championship, a game involving the two in-form sides in the division.

The Clarets are storming away from the rest of the second tier having lost just twice this season, whereas West Brom are beginning to realise their potential after a change of management.

Match preview

Vincent Kompany has changed the footballing identity at Turf Moor and is guiding Burnley to a comfortable finish in the top two of the Championship, with the Clarets a mammoth 16 points ahead of third-placed Watford.

The ex-Manchester City defender's team are currently seven unbeaten in the league, with Louis Beyer's second-half strike at Coventry City earning Burnley their fifth consecutive win in all competitions last weekend.

This Burnley side are not merely primed for the Championship - they have shown their ability to compete with Premier League sides this campaign, most notably when they triumphed over Bournemouth in the third round of the FA Cup.

A trip to Manchester United in the EFL Cup was less fruitful - a 2-0 loss was suffered and exit at the last-16 stage sealed - but Old Trafford saw a brave and adventurous Clarets side, changed from their period under the stewardship of Sean Dyche.

Burnley are yet to lose at Turf Moor in the Championship this season having collected 34 points from just 14 matches in front of their home faithful, averaging over two goals per game in the process.

West Brom extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to six matches after a 4-0 demolition of National League side Chesterfield in their FA Cup third-round replay at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night.

A second-string Baggies side dispatched their fifth-tier opposition and never looked in danger of suffering an upset, with Carlos Corberan's rotation for that game heavily influenced by the looming trip to Turf Moor this Friday.

If Burnley are the obvious title favourites, then West Brom are mimicking the Clarets from further down the division - the Baggies have won nine of their last 10 matches in the Championship, a run which has seen them rise to sixth in the league standings.

It was clear to see from the outside that former manager Steve Bruce was not getting enough out of a talented group of players, but the rate at which Corberan has improved West Brom's fortunes would not have been expected by even the most optimistic supporter.

Key players returning from lengthy injuries have helped the ex-Huddersfield Town boss - none more so than Daryl Dike - although Albion's ability to now keep regular clean sheets is the primary reason why they have ascended the second-tier table so rapidly, with West Brom recording shutouts in seven of their last 10 league matches.

Team News

Kompany was dealt a massive blow during their FA Cup success at Bournemouth, with centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis suffering a foot injury which will leave him sidelined for around two months.

Full-back Charlie Taylor partnered the goalscoring Beyer in the central-defensive pairing at Coventry last time out, and the 29-year-old is expected to once again fill the void left by the injury to Harwood-Bellis.

The Clarets will also be without right-back Vitinho for the visit of the Baggies, meaning Tyler Roberts will form part of the back four for the hosts at Turf Moor.

West Brom made a host of changes for their FA Cup fixture with Chesterfield and despite turning out a decent display, the likes of Okay Yokuslu, Jed Wallace, Dara O'Shea and the aforementioned Dike will regain their places in the starting XI.

Kyle Bartley is still unavailable due to a foot injury, meaning either Erik Pieters or Semi Ajayi will partner O'Shea in the middle of the West Brom defence, with Connor Townsend and Darnell Furlong occupying full-back positions.

West Brom will be without striker Brandon Thomas-Asante who is serving a three-match suspension for elbowing an opponent during the 3-3 draw at Chesterfield earlier this month.

Karlan Grant is another attacking option for Corberan who is currently unavailable, and winger Matt Phillips went down with an injury in the second half of their FA Cup replay on Tuesday night, meaning his involvement against Burnley is in major doubt.

Burnley possible starting lineup:
Muric; Roberts, Beyer, Taylor, Maatsen; Cullen, Gudmundsson, Brownhill; Benson, Rodriguez, Zaroury

West Bromwich Albion possible starting lineup:
Palmer; Furlong, O'Shea, Pieters, Townsend; Yokuslu, Molumby, Wallace, Swift, Diangana; Dike

We say: Burnley 1-1 West Bromwich Albion

Burnley have been unbeatable at home so far this season but now clash with a West Brom side who are firing under Corberan after a difficult spell with Bruce.

The Baggies face their toughest assignment since Corberan took charge on Friday night at Turf Moor and you get the feeling they would take a respectable point to keep their unbeaten run going.
